The largest aircraft parking area at Ostend Airport is being renovated. Along with Apron 2, all service roads are also being redeveloped. The project started in April 2021 and is expected to be completed by December 2022. We are already deploying substantial resources.
BAMBAM breaks concrete
The renovation works are being carried out by road construction company Colas. Verhelst Aannemingen was responsible for the demolition of 140,000 m² of concrete pavement. To break the 40 cm thick concrete layer, we brought our BAMBAM to Ostend (watch the video below). With this self-designed powerhouse, we managed to demolish the concrete in no time. We then used an 80-ton excavator to remove all the pieces.
Sand, sand and sand
In addition to the demolition works, Verhelst Aannemingen also handled the earthworks. To do this, 105,000 m³ of sand was excavated, sieved, and transported. We processed 80,000 tons of this on the site in Ostend. We then applied 28,000 m³ of subbase made from locally crushed concrete debris so the main contractor could take care of the further development of the site.
Because the airport remained operational the entire time, the works had to be carried out quickly and carefully. A challenge that our teams have effortlessly met with the right machines and manpower.
