For the construction of a new terminal in Zeebrugge, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions enlisted our groundworkers. The port environment, the scale of the project, and the short execution time made it a challenge that we gladly accepted.

A realization of

The project

The new terminal of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions is coming to Koffieweg in the back port of Zeebrugge. The Swedish-Norwegian ro-ro shipping line aims to create extra space for parking cars and High & Heavy machines. The total area of the site covers 200,000 m².

Impressive numbers

The scale of the work on the new terminal is best captured in numbers.

  • 360,000 m³ earthworks
  • 16 ha of asphalt paving
  • 4 ha of paving stones
  • 5 km of sewerage
  • 10 km of ducts

Who does what?

In December last year, Verhelst Aannemingen began the first phase: the earthmoving of 360,000 m³ of soil (including pre-consolidation). For this, we deployed, among other things, two new Volvo A40 dumpers. The remaining works will be carried out throughout 2022 together with Willemen Infra: 5 km of sewers with 3 KWS separators, a 10 km pull-well system with associated inspection wells, 4 ha of pavers and 16 ha of asphalt pavement with foundation layers. Verhelst Aannemingen is responsible for the construction of 2 ha of pavers and 8 ha of asphalt pavement including sewers and draw pipes. Top-Mix is responsible for the supply of 24,000 m³ of cement-bound stone and 9,000 m³ of lean concrete. TopAsfalt has ordered 22,000 tons of asphalt. The delivery is scheduled for December 2022.

Additional Points of Attention

The work on the new terminal of Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions is quite a challenge, even for seasoned contractors. For instance, the High&Heavy zone must be preloaded due to the specific composition of the soil (wet sand, sludge, and clay) to prevent settlement. In addition, the execution period is particularly short, but not insurmountable... To be continued!
